Digital multimeter
A basic meter that measures DC voltage, resistance, and continuity is the most useful diagnostic tool on a beginner bench. Continuity mode quickly finds broken jumpers and misunderstood breadboard rows.
Flush cutters and wire strippers
Choose small cutters for component leads and strippers sized for common hookup wire. Never use precision cutters on hardened steel.
Precision driver and tweezers
A compact driver set helps with enclosures and terminals. Fine tweezers make small jumpers and components easier to position. The iFixit sample product is aimed more at electronics repair and enclosure access than circuit measurement, so pair it with a multimeter.
Useful supplies
- Known-good USB data cables
- Male-to-male and male-to-female jumpers
- Compartment boxes for parts
- Masking tape and a fine marker for labels
- Safety glasses for cutting leads

A temperature-controlled soldering iron, stand, solder, flux, ventilation, and practice boards make sense once you begin permanent assemblies. Learn safe technique before purchasing the cheapest unregulated iron.
What not to skip
Good lighting, a clear work surface, and a habit of disconnecting power before rewiring prevent more problems than an expensive specialty tool.
